Thuma believes that sophisticated homes are built on simple, clean designs. That ethos spoke to me and my wife, so we decided to invest in one of their bed frames. It’s a beautiful object that we love having in our home, but competes against great alternatives from other brands.

Should you try Thuma? Read on for a full review (and a close look at their competitors) after a month of sleeping on their bed frame.

Quick Facts

First, a few quick facts about Thuma before we get into the review.

  • Thuma bed frames are made from solid American hardwoods like maple, walnut, and oak.
  • The frames are available in a variety of finishes, including black, white and natural (my favorite).
  • The bed frames are also compatible with all standard mattresses and come with a 10-year warranty.

So how did my Thuma bed frame score after a month of testing? Here’s a quick ratings breakdown that will be expanded on in the sections below.

Ratings Breakdown

Style: ★★★★★

This is where Thuma really shines. Their sleek, natural bed frame is minimalist and gorgeous. I don’t see myself ever going back to a larger, clunkier bed frame.

Ease of Use: ★★★★

My Thuma bed-frame was easy to put together, once I was able to lay out all the pieces in their proper place (hint: they all look exactly the same at first glance).

Durability: ★★★

So far so good… but we’ll see? This is honestly my biggest concern with my Thuma bed frame given its sleek profile and lack of screws to hold it together.

Value: ★★★★

Thuma is definitely an investment given their $1000+ price points. But I’ve learned that whenever you’re in the furniture market, it’s time to break out the checkbook.

Ease of Putting Together

Thuma’s bed frame is a Japanese Joinery. There are no nails or screws holding it together, just great design and gravity. The frame itself was quite easy to put together. The hardest part was laying out all of the pieces in their proper positions before assembly, as they all looked quite similar (even though they serve very different functions). From there, it was just a matter of following Thuma’s diagram to put my bed frame together.

Thuma's bed frames use a timeless design philosophy

During assembly, I was impressed with how sturdy Thuma’s hardwood components felt as they locked together. I haven’t had any issues with durability after a month of sleeping on their frame, but am curious to see how it holds up over time.

Design Ethos

My Thuma bed frame is crafted from solid American oak in the company’s “natural” finish. The design is incredibly minimalist and stylish, and it will look great in any bedroom. I also love the way the headboard curves up at the top. Overall, Thuma’s bed frame offers a unique and elegant design that speaks for itself:

No screws to be seen, yet the Thuma frame is very solid

Price Relative to Competitors

Thuma is on the upper end of price relative to their competitors. Here’s a quick rundown of some other bed frame options:

  • Floyd ($956 for a queen-sized frame): similarly minimalist bed frames that are not as elegant as Thuma, but may appeal to those who want a wooden headboard.
  • Article ($399 for a queen-sized frame): For those on a budget, Article is a good option for a wooden bed frame. It does not look nearly as premium as the other options on this list.
  • Burrow ($1,219 for queen-sized frame w/ headboard): Burrow comes in at a similar price point to Thuma, with a more modern-looking bed frame.

When it comes to price, you get what you pay for with bed frames. If you want solid design and something that’s built to last, Thuma is a great option. If you’re on a budget, you may want to consider an option like Article.

Final Thoughts

Thuma offers uniquely elegant and minimalist designs that combine simplicity with sophistication. Their bed frames, though pricey, are a testament to refined craftsmanship and a commitment to a clean design aesthetic.

Despite my concerns over the long-term durability of their Japanese joinery design, my bed frame has held up well throughout our month-long trial. While the market offers more affordable options, the value Thuma provides, in terms of aesthetics and craftsmanship, does justify their higher price point. A worthy investment, Thuma is ideal for those seeking to enhance their bedroom with function and style.
