For adults, greens and superfood supplements are a nutritional safety net, covering any gaps left by even the most balanced diets. But for kids, over 90% don’t eat enough fruits or vegetables,1 meaning that getting the right greens and nutrients is even more important.

Picky eating, dietary restrictions, and a variety of other complications can contribute to this problem. Are greens and superfoods supplements a good way to get kids the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development?

We turned to pediatric nutrition expert and registered dietitian, Rachel Rothman (MS, RD, CLEC), to help us navigate the many greens and superfoods supplement options for kids. Drawing on Rothman’s expertise, we’ve put three top children’s greens brands to the test: Hiya Kids Daily Greens & Superfoods, Gruns Kids, and Organifi Kids: Easy Greens.

We compared Organifi, Gruns, and Hiya kids’ daily greens supplements

One brand emerged as the clear winner in terms of nutrient balance, quality, and safety. Read on to discover which came out on top!

Choosing a Kids’ Greens Supplement

What should you look for (or avoid) in kids’ greens supplements? We asked Rothman, our pediatric dietitian, for some pointers:

Do:

✅ Fruits & Veggies: “Use supplements that pack a ‘nutritional punch’ with a wide variety of whole food ingredients,” says Rothman.  “This helps children meet overall nutrition needs, unlike a supplement containing a small number of fruits and vegetables.”

✅ Other Nutrients: Look for supplements with Calcium and Vitamin D, as these are extremely important for building strong bones and muscles in kids.2 “It's challenging to satisfy the recommended daily intake of these nutrients, so I love seeing a product that has enough Vitamin D and Calcium.”

Don’t:

🚫 Sugar: It seems like a no-brainer, but just say no to added sugar! Instead, look for brands that use natural, non-insulin-spiking sweeteners, like monk fruit extract.

🚫 Gummies: “I recommend that families avoid gummies with added sugar, which often get stuck in kids’ teeth,” says Rothman. Not only can gummies lead to cavities,3 but they can also be a choking hazard for kids 3 and under.4

Now, let’s see how Hiya, Gruns, and Organifi Kids compare!

Greens & Superfood Supplements Compared:

The Ingredients:

Hiya Wins With 55 Whole Food Ingredients and Zero Sugar

With 55 whole food ingredients, like organic kale, broccoli, and spinach powders, Hiya’s Kids Greens and Superfoods provides kids with the most well-rounded nutrition of all 3 options. It contains blends targeting cognitive development and digestion, with superfoods like marine algae and D2 mushroom; as well as quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat, which are important sources of fiber.5 It also has 38 mg of Calcium and 8 mcg of Vitamin D, essential nutrients for kids’ bone and muscle development.2

Hiya also has no sugar, which we loved!

We prefer giving our kids supplements without the added sugar!

Gruns has 31 fruits and vegetables in its kids’ gummy. Like Hiya, it contains targeted ingredients, like “super mushrooms” and a fiber blend. However, Gruns also contains 7 grams of added sugar in each serving - which may not be ideal for your kids’ dental or long-term health (you can always consult with your dentist about what they recommend).

Finally, Organifi contains 9 fruits and vegetables in its powder blend (vs 55 in Hiya’s). It contains 2 grams of added sugar, as well as tree nuts, a common allergen.

Safety: Powders vs Gummies

Hiya and Organifi Win With Dissolvable Powder

It’s always important to consider the form of kids’ supplements and vitamins. As discussed, parents should understand the potential risks in giving their kids gummy supplements, as gummies have been documented as a choking hazard and can negatively impact kids’ dental health.3,4

We prefer the powder form of Hiya and Organifi kids’ greens supplements

Instead, we prefer the powder form of Hiya and Organifi kids' greens supplements. Both brands are easily dissolvable in water or milk, or can be added to smoothies or popsicles, if you’re feeling adventurous! These products are also safe for kids aged 2+, unlike gummies.4

Last - But Not Least - Taste!

Hiya’s Kids Greens Powder Tastes JUST Like Chocolate Milk

Taste and texture are the biggest hurdles when it comes to picky eaters. So, we conducted a TCD taste test!

We blended the powders in their recommended liquid (water for Organifi and milk for Hiya, although there are other ways to enjoy both), and of course, served Gruns gummies as is.

Organifi’s green powder came in last place. Although it tasted better than broccoli, the hue was just too similar. Our kid testers were put off by the green juice, and we found it was not worth the drama!

Gruns placed second. The kids were again hesitant to try something so green, but being fans of gummies/candy, they eventually caved. The taste was tolerable, but a bit “vegetable-y.”

Finally, Hiya was our taste test winner. It looked and tasted just like chocolate milk, which the kids loved! Even knowing what was inside, it was still hard to believe there are so many vegetables in a scoop.

Hiya Kids Daily Greens & Superfoods "chocolate milk" flavor gets a thumbs up from Ridge!

The Overall Winner: Hiya Kids Daily Greens & Superfoods

Which kids’ greens supplement is best? We recommend Hiya Kids Daily Greens and Superfoods because it:

🥬 Has the most whole food ingredients

🚫 Has the least sugar (0g)

🥛 Is a safe, dissolvable powder

🍫 Tastes just like chocolate milk!

Rothman, our pediatric dietitian, agreed. “I love that all of the ingredients in Hiya Greens & Superfoods are made from whole foods. With a blend of more than 55 organic fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and grains, I recommend it to families. Plus, it’s a bonus when you can find a product without added sugar - and that tastes good to kids!”
