When Daniel turned 10 months, he couldn’t stop reaching for my plate: a good sign that he was ready to transition to solid foods. This process (which I've gone through with my daughter) is overwhelming:
✅ Which foods are safe and nutritious?
🧐 What size and texture are right—and how do I tell?
🔢 How many meals per day?
🔪 Do I REALLY need to chop every ingredient into perfect bite-sized pieces?
That’s until I found a special shortcut: outsourcing my meal prep (and anxiety) to Nurture Life’s Finger Foods.
Read to find out why Nurture Life’s safe and whole ingredient Finger Foods are a great substitute for home-cooked meals. I’ll share my hands-on experience and get Rachel Rothman’s (MS, RD, CLEC) take—a pediatric dietitian, and mom herself!
But First: How to Transition to Solid Foods
According to Rothman—our pediatric dietitian—a safe and successful transition to solid foods means:
- Correct Timing: Usually 8-10 months, when babies show good head control, interest in food & chewing, and are using a pincer grasp.
- Nutrition & Ingredients: Whole foods with a mix of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats; avoid added sodium and sugar.
- Safety: Soft foods to avoid choking. Ensure that you can “squish the food with two fingers, or with tongue and the roof of the mouth,” Rothman tells us.
- Variety: Different flavors and textures to help develop a healthy palate.
✅ Nutrition & Ingredients: Baby Foods Designed by Dietitians
I have zero background in nutrition, so it’s nerve-wracking (and a lot of work!) to ensure my son gets the right nutrients in the right amounts.
Nurture Life’s Finger Food recipes are created by Registered Dietitians. Each includes the grains, vegetables, and proteins essential for my son’s growth and development. Danny’s favorite is Chicken Meatballs with Mini Pasta. It’s high in protein and iron, low in sugar and sodium, and made from only whole ingredients, like antibiotic-free chicken and organic pasta.
To prepare, I just open the jar, transfer to a heat-safe bowl, microwave for 30 seconds, and serve. That’s a total of 2 minutes from fridge to table. There are 18 recipes (!), which means Danny hasn’t gotten tired of the same food.
All of Nurture Life’s meals have the same high-quality ingredients that I use at home: organic produce, antibiotic- and hormone-free proteins, and whole grains. Plus, no artificial additives or preservatives.
Meals are made fresh and never frozen (unlike other kid’s meal services that claim “fresh” but ship frozen 🙁).
✅ Safety: The Right Size, Shape & Texture
Nurture Life’s Finger Foods are big enough to pick up AND small & soft enough to prevent choking. “That’s ideal for learning how to self-feed,” Rothman, our pediatric dietitian, tells us.
I think we underestimate how prevalent choking is in kids – according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 12,000 kids visit the ER each year for choking! I’m happy that Nurture Life makes safety a priority.
Bonus: all Nurture Life products are made in a facility that is free of peanuts and tree nuts, milk, egg, fish and shellfish - perfect for children with allergies.
✅ Taste & Variety: Just Like Homemade (Maybe Better?)
Nurture Life Finger Foods have been a hit with Danny. Yes, I’ve snuck a bite—and the taste and quality are just like homemade. It's a huge win to see him so excited at mealtime (maybe even a bit more excited than when I cook…🤷♀️).
Besides Chicken Meatballs, Danny really loves Shepherd's Pie with Rainbow Veggie Medley and Salmon Cakes with Peas & Potatoes.
✅ Convenience: Delivered Weekly & Prepared in Minutes
Nurture Life’s Finger Foods are delivered weekly and prepared in just a couple minutes. That really does relieve the mental load of researching, grocery shopping, and meal prepping for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
At just $2.99 per meal with the current offer, say no more.
