Want to become pregnant this year? OB/GYNs agree: before you even try for a baby, it’s crucial to get the right nutrients. There are many “pre”-prenatal options out there - supplements specifically formulated to boost fertility and prepare for pregnancy.

So, with the help of our Prenatal Dietitian, Vanessa Dyer (RDN), we evaluated  the top per-prenatals - supplements specifically formulated to boost fertility and prepare for pregnancy: Perelel’s Conception Support Pack, Ritual’s Prenatal Multivitamin, and Premama’s Fertility Support for Her.

We evaluated each on: 1) ingredients, 2) quality, 3) expertise, and 4) convenience. One clear winner stood out in our hands-on comparison testing - read on to find out which!

What to Look for in Fertility Support Supplements

Good fertility supplements go beyond prenatal vitamins. They provide vital nutrients for a healthy pregnancy, but also contain ingredients proven to boost fertility, plus vital nutrients for a healthy start to your pregnancy. That includes selenium, CoQ10, and vitamin A - to help support egg health and quality when it matters most - in addition to folate, omega-3s, iron, and B–vitamins.  “Take them as soon as you’ve decided to conceive,” Dyer advises.

We reviewed Ritual, Perelel, and Premama’s conception support supplements

Now, let’s take a look at how Perelel, Ritual, and Premama fertility supplements compare.

Ingredients:

Perelel Wins on Both Breadth and Depth of Nutrients

We summarize each brand's dosages below:

Perelel covers all the bases to support fertility and conception. It is the only option with CoQ10 and Selenium to promote egg health and fertility,1 and includes both Omega DHA and EPA, which have been shown to increase fertility.2

Perelel also contains all of the important vitamins: B6, B12, D3, A, C, E, and K2.

Finally, it has the most folate of all three options, vital for a healthy neural tube and spinal cord in the first weeks of pregnancy.3 All in all, Perelel’s comprehensive formula best optimizes your chance for healthy conception and pregnancy.

Ritual comes second, but contains only half of the nutrients important for fertility (and included in Perelel’s formula). Notably, Ritual does not differentiate between prenatal and conception support. Dyer, our Prenatal Dietitian, does not recommend taking prenatal vitamins for conception support. “Prenatal vitamins don’t provide important nutrients, like CoQ10, that are needed for a healthy embryo and ovulation.”

Premama’s Conception Support for Her contains just four ingredients.

Finally, even though Premama makes a vitamin tailored for conception; it is surprisingly lacking in nutrients, containing only four ingredients: Folate, Vitamin B12, Myo-Inositol, and Maltodextrin, the latter two which are only appropriate in special circumstances.4,5

Perelel wins easily on its high quality, fertility-specific ingredients.

Expertise:

Perelel Wins as the Only Supplement Founded by an OB/GYN

Ritual was founded by a mother frustrated by the pseudoscience of mass-produced products; and Premama is a venture by a serial entrepreneur and businessman.

Perelel was developed by an OB/GYN, Dr. Banafsheh Bayati, who recognized that developmental and hormonal changes throughout pregnancy impact your nutritional needs.6,7

Perelel’s Conception Support Pack was formulated with top reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Andy Huang, MD.

Convenience

Perelel’s and Premama’s Daily Packs Make Things Simple
Daily packs of conception supplements are helpful for keeping track of intake.

Perelel and Premama products come in daily packs, great for your commute or travel. Ritual's pills come in a less handy plastic bottle, with a dose of just 2 per day.

Perelel’s dose is 5 small pills. Some testers were able to take them at once, while some needed a couple gulps.

Premama is a maltodextrin-based powder, for mixing in liquid. Our testers noted a slightly chunky but tolerable consistency when taking Premama. If you can’t tolerate multiple pills, consider Premama - but you’ll need to supplement with additional nutrients.

Quality:

It’s a Tie Between Perelel and Ritual

We feel confident in the quality and transparency of the ingredients behind Perelel and Ritual. Although the FDA does not regulate dietary supplements, both brands follow the FDA’s current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and utilize third-party testing.

Ritual focuses on traceability (i.e. where the ingredients are sourced). They test their product during each stage of production.

Perelel triple-tests each batch of its product for purity, safety, and quality. Each order contains clinically-backed ingredients that exceed USP microbiological standards.

Additional ingredient info can be found on each brand’s website.

The Verdict is in: Perelel is the Best Fertility-Specific Supplement

Perelel is the best option for fertility supplements based on our two most important factors: ingredients and efficacy. It’s also convenient, and is the only major supplement of its kind to be created by an OB/GYN.

“Perelel contains all of the important nutrients needed for healthy conception and fertility,” says Dyer, our prenatal dietician. “I recommend Perelel Conception Support to my clients trying to conceive. It’s research-backed, evidence based, and OB/GYN-led.”
